Migration & Development: Educational migrants from Africa and Asia in the divided and reunified Germany
The oral history project on the topic of education-migration in developing counties was enabled by the Federal Foundation for the Reappraisal of the SED-Dictatorship (Stiftung zur Aufarbeitung der SED-Diktatur). The publication deriving from this project analyses the structures and aims of the so-called academic studies for foreign students in the GDR during the 1970’s and 80’s. It deals with the biographical experiences and breaches of twenty educational migrants (from Algeria, Angola, Ethiopia, Zimbabwe, Cameroon, Vietnam, Mongolia and Laos) after the fall of the Berlin wall in 1989. The educational migrants talk about their entry into the GDR, their arrival and settling in, about the intercultural living, their studies and their working life before and after 1989, the opening of the border and the experienced discrimination as a foreigner.
